Chapter 18

        
Colin said, “This killing fits into a pattern. There have been five of them, counting her. The first four were one month apart. The first body was discovered in LA. ; next three were located in or around Death Valley National Monument. The park is huge. Might be the biggest in the U.S. This is where it gets hinky. A whole year goes by before the next killing. Then, as you know, we discover her body on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building.
         We were all silent for a bit.
         “We know the initials mean something,” I said. “But what about the location? Where they dumped the body.”
         “No clue.”
         “Terry?” I prompted.
         “Were the other locations clues of some sort?” he asked.
         “Don’t know.”
         Colin slowly turned the pages.
         Somehow the fact that the body lay on bare cement made it more sickening.
         We said nothing.
         Then Colin sat back in his chair. “So the question becomes: Is Katherine Rollins Number Five? Or is this a copycat killing? If it’s the latter, the perp got all the details right. I mean exactly right. We’ll get to the details in a minute. General questions?”
         “Were all he victims female?” I asked.
         “All except one. Older black dude they found in a vacant lot. Dressed like a cowboy. L.A. cops made him as a pimp or a dealer.”
         I looked down at my watch. It was time to wind it up. Take our notes and leave the building.

Chapter 85 Colin broke his promise to the chief the next evening. He was barbecuing ribs for Mike Rollins and his ex, Joy, Amy Feingold and me. I watched Mike Rollins and Amy, who had come in together. I thought they might be a couple, but then I remembered the powerful bond they shared. Katherine. Not to mention they were still neighbors and running partners. Joy looked fabulous in her designer jeans and silk blouse. Mostly she looked relieve d. Linda told me later that Joy had been crying before she came. No surprise there. And Linda? She wore a Stanford sweatshirt and a pair of jeans and played hostess, as if nothing had happened. Chapter 82 It turned out that Colin’s bullet missed both the heart and lungs of Jason Powers, but it hit his spine. The attending physician said it was too early to tell if he would be able to walk unaided. Late afternoon of the next day he was fully conscious inside SF General Hospital. Chief Howell signaled the attending nurse to leave the room.  She did.
